Desalinated water is safe for human consumption and meets international standards – the Municipality

The Baghdad Municipality confirmed on Saturday that the potable water produced at treatment plants is safe for human consumption and complies with the standards of the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health. It noted that tests are conducted continuously through specialized laboratories and inspection teams to ensure water safety. The municipality’s spokesperson, Uday Al-Jandil, explained that complaints about poor water quality in some areas are often due to illegal encroachments on the network, which lead to localized contamination. He emphasized that the relevant authorities act promptly to address these issues. He added that the municipality has completed the renewal of about 90% of the water networks in the capital, with ongoing efforts to replace old networks. He pointed out that water coverage includes all areas within the master plan as well as newly developed areas after sewer services are completed. He also indicated that agricultural and informal (unplanned) areas are not legally permitted to receive official network connections; however, they are supplied with water for humanitarian reasons. At the same time, he confirmed that water production continues without interruption despite the decline in the Tigris River’s water levels, thanks to advanced treatment processes.

Rabia returns after 13 years… Iraq’s gateway to Syria

In a move carrying economic, political, and security dimensions, Iraq has reopened the Rabia border crossing with Syria after 13 years of closure, signaling a government effort to revive border crossings and enhance trade openness with neighboring countries. The crossing was reopened in the presence of Iraqi and Syrian officials, with authorities emphasizing that this step marks the beginning of a new phase of economic cooperation and the revival of trade exchange between the two countries. The Rabia crossing is located west of Nineveh Governorate and connects Iraq to Syria’s Al-Hasakah Governorate. It is considered one of the most important land crossings in the country’s northwest, providing a vital route for trucks and goods movement. In recent years, the closure of the crossing increased pressure on alternative routes and raised logistical costs. Its reopening is expected to ease these burdens and improve the flow of trade. At the local level, residents of Nineveh see the reopening as an opportunity to revive the economy and create jobs after years of challenges. The Iraqi government is betting on restoring Rabia’s role as a key commercial corridor, as part of broader efforts to position Iraq as an economic link between countries in the region.
